What is Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA)?

What is Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA)?

  • A Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) is a document provided by Employment and Social Development Canada (not Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) that Canadian employers may need before hiring a foreign worker

  • A positive LMIA confirms that no Canadians or permanent residents are available to fill a job vacancy due to a shortage of skilled labor.

Is LMIA always needed to hire foreign workers?

  • No. Some foreign workers can be exempt from an LMIA based on their nationality or the type of work.
